Food From Around the World ESL Lesson Plan

Photo From Epsos.de
This is a great lesson to teach advanced or adult students about food. The quiz at the start is tough but gets them really interested in the topic. The rest of the lesson is spent talking about different categories of food and the differences between what countries eat and what the reasons are.

Objectives.
To learn about different categories of food. To learn/review how to use comparative sentences.

Materials.

PPT
Whiteboards.
Paper/notebook for the students to write on.
Pictures of average weekly food intake of different countries. Click here for pictures.

Part One.

Introduce the topic of the lesson and ask the students some questions about their favourite foods from around the world. Open the national geographic quiz and ask the students to discuss and decide the answer to each question in their groups. (20mins)

Part Two.

Introduce the vocabulary for different types of food. Show the students the pictures of what different countries eat in a week. Ask the students to decide what type of food each country eats and what the reasons are. Ask each group to present their answers to the class (20 mins)

Part Three.

Ask the students to list the food they eat in an average week in the correct categories. Show the students some example comparative sentences and ask the students to make sentences comparing what they eat to the food in the pictures. (10mins)

Bonus activity
I didn't have time in my classes for this activity but it would be good if you had a quick class or need to give homework. Give each group one of the strange foods on the last slide. Ask them to research what the food is and introduce it to the other groups. The foods are:

Casu Marzu - Cheese from Italy that contains live larvae.
Balut - Fertilized duck embryo boiled and eaten from the shell.
Fugu - Pufferfish Sushi. If prepared incorrectly it can kill you!
Durian - An apparently delicious fruit... with a terrible smell.
